SHOULD I GET MY BRAKES CHECKED?

If you feel you have an issue with your brakes you should, for safety sake, get booked in for a check as soon as possible. Run through this checklist of signs you may need to come down and see us at Low Cost Tyres:

GRINDING

Heavily worn brake pads have little/no friction material which can cause a grinding/rubbing noise. Grinding can indicate you're down to the metal caliper which could damage your brake disc.

SQUEAKS & SQUEALS

Next to grinding this is a common report with many causes.  Wear indicators may be warning of wear, your caliper may be stuck, there may be foreign matter like a stone stuck in your brake.  Bring your car down and we'll check it out.

SOFT BRAKES

If your brake pedal travels easily to the floor, is limp and ineffective then there's a serious fault with your brakes and you need an immediate inspection.  Probable causes include master cylinder, brake fluid, leaks in the system.  This is a serious one, we'll get you booked in as early as possible.

SPONGY BRAKES

If air enters your brake system it can prevent brake fluid from doing its job which can result in your brake pedal feeling 'spongy' and unresponsive.  We'll check your hoses and system components to identify the issue.

PULLING TO ONE SIDE

If you feel the car pull when you apply the brakes it is likely there's a mechanical problem with your brake system: seized caliper, sticking hydraulics and such.  The team can inspect, identify the issue and suggest solutions.

WARNING LIGHTS

There are a multitude of reasons why brake warning lights appear on your dash.  Most commonly we find this due to brake fluid problems, low brake fluid levels, leaking hoses etc.  Bring your car down so we can identify the problem and let you know what's involved with fixing it.

PULSING

If you can feel a regular wobble feedback through the brake pedal then it is likely you have a warped or uneven brake disc or issues with the ABS.  if this happens over time or regularly you should have us check it.

BRAKE FLUID CHANGE
Most manufacturers recommend your fluid is changed every 2 years as over time its effectiveness diminishes, which in turn causes issues with your brakes efficiency.

IAN'S ACE TIPS

A MOVING EXPERIENCE

Parking on a slope and got the feeling you may be moving or there's a squeak coming from your wheels when you move around in the car?

Issues with the hand brake are commonly to do with cable tightness.  Travel of the handbrake should be 5-8 'clicks' as you raise it up. Too few clicks and the cable is tight which can cause your brakes to drag.  Too many clicks and you're heading toward an MOT fail.

There aren't too many hills to roll down around Mildenhall, but you should get your handbrake checked if you feel it's not right.
